Once upon a time, it really was possible to buy a somewhat habitable house in Detroit for just $500. But that era of shocking deals more or less ended by the late 2010s, after thousands of blighted and abandoned houses in the city had been demolished and home values across the metro region finally rebounded to pre-Great Recession levels.
