Detroit Land Bank Authority Partners with Job Training Program

The Detroit Land Bank Authority's Rehabbed & Ready team is committed to proactively turning blighted houses into beautiful homes. Recognizing a need for more skilled laborers, and the DLBA's unique resources, the team conceptualized a program that creates an opportunity for hands-on learning while adding value to Rehabbed & Ready properties.

The DLBA chose Emerging Industries Training Institute (EITI) as its pilot partner because of the school's unique approach to job placement for its students. EITI is the only employer-led training facility in Detroit. Their relationship with employers to ensure its graduates have a direct path to employment in high-demand construction-related fields. So far, EITI students have successfully built one garage and are near completion of their second. Students receive real job-site experience under the supervision of an experienced, licensed foreman. The program is open to adults, 18 or older, veterans and returning citizens are encouraged to apply.

Students can even train for free in partnership with Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation. The DLBA secured a $50,000 grant from the Berman Foundation to cover construction-related costs for the pilot program. This collaboration is an outstanding example of how public and private entities can work together to eliminate blight, reduce barriers to employment, and create affordable paths to homeownership.
